The short answer is No, yogurt is not vegan friendly, however yoghurt is vegetarian.
Have you ever found yourself standing in the dairy aisle, a tub of yogurt in hand, and wondered, “Is this vegan?” If so, you’re not alone.
This question has puzzled many, especially those who are new to the vegan lifestyle or are considering making the switch. So, let’s unravel this mystery together, shall we?
Yogurt is a food produced by bacterial fermentation of milk. The bacteria used to make yogurt are known as yogurt cultures. Fermentation of sugars in the milk by these bacteria produces lactic acid, which acts on milk protein to give yogurt its texture and characteristic tart flavor.[1]
Cow’s milk is the most commonly used to make yogurt. Which leads us to our main question “Can vegans eat yogurt?”.
Can Vegans Eat Yogurt? Is Yoghurt Vegan?
No. Traditional yogurt is not vegan friendly, as it is made with dairy product (milk).
In fact, most traditional yogurts are dairy based and are not suitable for vegans.
However, there are now many vegan yogurt brands made with a plant-based milk, like So Delicious, AYO, COYO and Silk to name a few.
Is There Such A Thing As Non Dairy Yogurt?
Absolutely, there is such a thing as non-dairy yogurt! Non-dairy yogurts are a fantastic alternative for those who are vegan, lactose intolerant, or simply looking to cut down on their dairy intake.
Non-dairy yogurts are made using plant-based milks instead of traditional cow’s milk. The plant-based milk is fermented with live cultures, much like traditional yogurt, resulting in a creamy, tangy product that closely resembles the taste and texture of dairy-based yogurt.
When shopping for non-dairy yogurt, it’s important to read the labels carefully. Some brands may add extra sugar or other additives to their products. Look for yogurts with minimal ingredients and, if possible, opt for unsweetened versions if you’re watching your sugar intake.
What Is Vegan Yogurt Made From?
Vegan yogurt is made from plant-based milks, which serve as the dairy-free alternative to traditional cow’s milk.
The plant milk is fermented with live cultures, similar to the process of making dairy-based yogurt.
Here are some of the most common types of plant-based milks used to make vegan yogurt:
- Soy Milk: Soy milk is a popular choice for vegan yogurt due to its high protein content, which helps to create a thick and creamy texture.
- Almond Milk: Almond milk is another common base for vegan yogurt. It tends to produce a slightly thinner yogurt with a subtle almond flavor.
- Coconut Milk: Coconut milk creates a rich and creamy vegan yogurt with a mild coconut flavor. It’s a great option for those who enjoy a thicker yogurt.
- Oat Milk: Oat milk is becoming increasingly popular as a base for vegan yogurt. It creates a mildly sweet yogurt with a creamy texture.
- Cashew Milk: Cashew milk produces a very creamy and rich vegan yogurt. It’s often a favorite among those who prefer a thicker consistency.
- Rice Milk: Rice milk can also be used to make vegan yogurt, although it’s less common. It tends to create a thinner yogurt with a slightly sweet flavor.
In addition to the plant-based milk, vegan yogurts often contain added thickeners like tapioca starch, pectin, or agar to enhance the texture.
They may also contain added sugars or flavors, so it’s always a good idea to check the ingredients list if you have specific dietary needs or preferences.
Remember, the taste and texture of vegan yogurts can vary greatly depending on the type of plant milk used and the specific brand, so don’t be afraid to try a few different ones to find your favorite!
